Kevin + Emily Marusiak | Calhoun Beach Club | Minneapolis, Minnesota

Back in February of this year I received an inquiry for a wedding back home in Minnesota and I was in complete awe of how she found me! Now a days social media is a very powerful tool for businesses even though the algorithms keep changing. When I finished scrolling through the inquiry form, I noticed that Emily had found me on Instagram!! I truly could not believe it. She was the first person to book a wedding through there. I guess that I must be doing something right lol

Just like any other wedding, you worry for about a week or two about how the weather is going to be. It showed that it was supposed to rain on Kevin and Emily’s wedding day for about a week beforehand. It rained the entire morning but cleared up just in time for their first look! The staff at the Calhoun Beach Club even came out and swept the balcony and dried it up so that Emily’s dress did not get dirty! Her dress was 100% custom made! While trying on dresses, she found many different ones that she liked for different reasons. While I was using Emily’s veil for some detail shots, her mom came over and informed me that the veil was hers when she got married 31 years ago.

During the speeches at the reception, Emily’s dad told the story of how Kevin had asked him for his daughters hand in marriage. While Christmas shopping, Kevin and Mike ended up stopping at the bar for a couple of drinks to take a break. Going off of Kevin’s frequent family talk, he asked Mike if the Burnett family would like to join his. While Kevin and Emily were visiting Flagstaff, Arizona, they I went out on the golf course which typically would be frozen but last winter was uncommonly warm and felt more like fall. Little did Emily know what was coming next. Kevin brothers and their wives were all hidden and taking pictures. When Kevin got down on one knee, all he said was “Will you?” Not long after they went back to Kevin’s moms house which was filled with their closest friends and family! They were all ready to celebrate Kevin and Emily’s surprise engagement.

A few questions that I had asked the couple:

Was it love at first sight?

I would say yes 🙂

Who made the first move?

Kevin. definitely.

How did you make it official?

Before summer break going into Sophomore year Kevin asked me to be his girlfriend and I said no! The next day I immediately retracted my statement and we were official at that point.

Tell me something weird about you as a couple:

We recently started working at the same office!! And now the whole place knows everything about us LOL

What’s your song?

Wagon Wheel! 100% it’s also the name of the bar I worked at in college where Kevin frequented 🙂 was also our recessional song at our wedding!

Where do you see yourselves in ten years?

Definitely dogs. Probably kids. Still working on our careers and supporting each others passions.

Best piece of love advice you can give:

Be best friends… but also each have your own best friend!

Emily designed their invites herself! She did absolutely amazing!!

But first…..

Kevin and Emily surprised their guests with a mariachi band!!

We had a surprise appearance from Kat Perkins!!! So amazing!

Is there anything better than a maternity session on the beach…? (Hint: the answer is no…. lol)   I vividly remember the day that Anna told me she was pregnant. I was just leaving base in Germany and pulled over since she was calling me on video. To say I was in disbelief is an […]

A little backstory before product photography came into my life…   I started really getting into photographing other people when we were in Florida in 2015. We then moved to Maryland in December of 2015 and that is when my business grew. I had regular clients, weddings, second shot a lot of weddings, and finally began […]

I remember how terribly inconsistent I was with poses during an engagement session back when I started photography and my oh my..   Do you remember Anna? Back in July of 2016 I was invited to a styled shoot by a friend 30 minutes before it started. I ended up getting stuck in traffic on […]

One thing I have learned from this quarantine (as a family photographer) is that there is always more work that can be done to work on your craft. Even if that does not include shooting. I am going back through older sessions and came across this session with my best friend Natalie of Natalie Grace […]

If you are stationed in Germany, you have most likely been to Burg Lichtenberg at least a handful of times. This is one of my favorite castles to go to for family sessions. The kids love to run around and play and the adults can really take in the scenery around Burg Lichtenberg. Going to this […]
